Subject: Question Answer: Love Marriage
Assalamu alikum,
Some years before, a girl in my family ran away on the eve of her arranged marriage with her lover, lived together for some time and later got married. It now happens that this girl and her lover are well off and the lover who married her is now religious and cares for the family. The person who was to marry her in the first place married another women later, but divorced her and turned out to be an "evil character" which nobody knew of beforehand.
Using this example in front of everyone's eyes, people here try to justify love marriage, and the tendency among the youth here and even many guardians is to prefer love marriage over arranged marriage.
What is the Islamic viewpoint?
Wassalam
Assalamualaykum.
Bhai love marriage is haraam and it is invalid, because due to two main reasons:
1. Love before the marriage involves many haram behaviours which the lovers know them very well.
2. Love Marriages are normally conducted without the permission of the 'Walee' and also without the presence of the walee the marriage is conducted which is also invalid. The Marriage without the permission of the Walee and in the absence of the walee the marriage is invalid.
Jazak Allahu Khayran
